Let's hopefully take some of this and use it locally! Teaching our kids from a young age about these things will only benefit us in the future.
Greening Arizona Schools - Recently, while reading "Green Living Magazine", the Back to School Issue for August, 2011, I came across an interesting article that I'd like to share. The article is titled, "Schools Going Green."
As a Certified EcoBroker, I'm always interested in articles about homes, but also about every day living. And what's more important than providing healthy spaces for our children, including their schools. Children spend a full day in school, which increases their chances to being exposed to harmful chemicals. If their school environment is healthy, then it makes sense that they would have an easier time digesting all of the information they are expected to soak in.
Not only would children be learning in a more healthy envornment, the school districts would be saving thousands on energy and operational costs. Of course the last item on the list of becoming a green school that isn't on everyone's list is a more healthy environment, ie carbon footprint.
The article goes on to describe what features are included in the list of must haves, as described by the U.S. Green Bulding Council (USGBC) for their Center for Green Schools. You'll be happy to know that 2nd on the list is saving taxpayers money!
Featured in the article is Desert Edge High School, Goodyear, Arizona, which obtained LEED Silver status. Green initiatives for the school will save $58,000 annually. Over a 20 year period, total savings reaches $1.2 million! Check out the graph with energy savings on their website!
